Only 31 days until Halloween! Fright Night has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love the cast of characters that includes jack-o’-lanterns, playful ghosts, haunted houses, cats and bats. The spooky frights and fun-loving delights of the holiday make decorating for Halloween especially fun and with my new Spooky Town Fabric Collection for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, you’ll be able to scare up some great decorations and costumes in just a few hours.
The collection includes pillow, apron, placemat, and treat bag panels as well as a great collection of glittery and ghostly coordinates. The panels make for fast sewing and we turned one of the pillow panels into a great door banner. So, sew up some fun before the bewitching time is here!

Garden Fabrics GaloreJune 7, 2009 in Crafts, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Quilting
“How’s it Growin” is printed in lovely soft shades of sky blue, fresh greens and a very sunny yellow palette. In addition to Garden Labels and a Word layout with lots of fun garden phrases like “Bless this Dirt, Planted with Love, Happy Thoughts Bloom in my Garden, Everything’s Coming up Daisies, you’ll also find a fun vine pattern along with coordinating flower and garden tool tosses.
“Teatime in the Garden” combines two favorite pastimes ~ Tea and Gardening. The periwinkle, yellow, orange and green color story adds to the serenity and sense of well-being that these two themes bring together. Inspect the fine quality of the printing in the close up of the frog sipping his tea while propped up to a pot that reads “Not Easy Being Green Tea.”
If you see something that tickles your fancy, please make your way over to JoAnn Fabric Stores to add these to your fabric collection.
A True Fabric FanJune 3, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Quilting
I recently received photos of a quilt made by Julie McGee that has been in the works for many, many years. She has been a longtime collector of Debbie Mumm fabrics and decided to display her collection in the form of a quilt. Even though there were no fabric stores near her, when she traveled she made it her mission to search out fabrics to add to her stash. And thank goodness for the internet where she rounded out her collection before she started piecing this beautiful Star Quilt. There are 108 stars in the quilt (each made out of a different fabric) and when you include the background and cornerstone fabrics her total count was 110 FABRICS! When Julia attached her photo to her email, she stated "I thought someone out there might appreciate seeing what lengths Debbie Mumm fans will go to." I think it's just FABULOUS!

Project Pics!May 3, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
I always love it when you send me photos of your projects. I recently received photos from Kathleen of Naples, Florida (it’s been a big Florida week) of the Easter table display she created. Kathleen recently got back into sewing and made up a darling tea cozy and table runner that coordinate perfectly with the mugs and egg cups in her setting. She even planted real grass in the egg cups – Clever! Kathleen – thank you for sharing how you used my products in your home and I hope sewing and decorating continue to add pleasure to your days.
Great Day for a Ribbon CuttingApril 30, 2009 in Current Affairs, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Media
My ongoing recovery from the long winter was enhanced even a little more when I got to visit Jensen Beach, Florida for a JoAnn Store Grand Opening. Not only were the temperatures toasty, but I was also greeted by about 60 very warm and sunny locals that showed up with some very friendly “Hello’s” and to witness the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. This shy, but darling little girl came by (okay, she might have been nudged a little by her grandmother and seamstress whiz) to model her dress that was made out of my fabric. I maneuvered the biggest pair of Fiskars on the planet to slice in half the ribbon that had been pieced together out of some of my fabrics. It was very satisfying! Thank you Florida for supporting this very busy Grand Opening Event.
Garden Boots – Practical and Decorative!April 6, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Decorating, Gardening, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
Does it get any simpler? And could anything look more like Spring? JoAnn Stores provides free “How To” project sheets in the store and this one features our fun new polka-dot rubber boots. Artificial Forsythia stems placed in these sunny yellow boots make a unique Spring statement when displayed on your front porch. And when you’re done with your display, slip your feet in them and look stylin’ while you clean out your garden beds. What a cute gift idea for Mom for hosting Easter Brunch.
Ahhhh......Signs of SpringApril 2, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Quilting
We love creating coordinating looks and this group really sings! Birds are such a welcome sign that Spring is in the air and so does this sophisticated collection. We created these simple-to-make appliquéd wall hangings for the Website this month.
And, they coordinate with our new Desktop backgrounds and a lovely “Thinking of You” card that you can send Just Because. Just in case you missed it, take a peek at the Songbirds fabric. It was so popular that it will be reprinted with additional coordinating prints too. (coming out in a couple months) Tweet~Tweet :-)
Spring FleeceMarch 31, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
Fleece isn’t just for winter projects. I don’t know about you, but I’m on the lookout for the colors and signs of spring, but I still need a cozy throw to keep me warm in the evenings. This comes especially handy when I’m curling up with a bowl of popcorn and watching the latest installment of American Idol. (even if you live in Arizona or Australia – you need to keep that cool air conditioning at bay) Luckily, we have a great new assortment of fresh and lively spring colored fleeces coming out. These cheery colors and designs are also great for a baby or toddler blankie too. A friend of mine is home convalescing after hip replacement surgery and I know it will make her day (and the many days to come) when I deliver her a new springy fleece blanket.

Get ready for a class, a crop or just to tote your projects from one room to the next with these great new products. Happy (almost) Spring!

Pajama PARTY!November 24, 2008 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
Since our office is piled high in fabric – we thought, let’s get together and have a PJ Making Party and use up some of this fabric. Picking our fabrics was the hardest job since we had so many choices. By taking turns cutting out our pieces, we managed to all share one pattern. (Butterick #B5153) We were too excited to stop for dinner, but snacked on brownies and Pinot Grigio. It was only a matter of two hours before we all emerged with our new Jammies. We hit Target to pick out coordinating tops to get ready for our “photo op.” (Fancy Jackie cut out and appliqued horses to her top.) We also made our get together an excuse to gather cash and food donations for our local food bank. Next day I hauled off five bags of groceries and a $100 check to Second Harvest!
Since we’re neighbors, let’s be friends!October 29, 2008 in Crafts, Friendship, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Quilting
What a friendly and attentive bunch they were. It was fun to show them the art for the Christmas product that is currently in boxes in their back rooms right now. Insiders tell us that the product will “set” on Saturday. Between touring and talking, we served them up my homemade Pumpkin Bread which is a recipe I’ve had for 40 years now! (Luckily they didn’t eat it all and we’ve been nibbling on it all afternoon – I’ll jot down the recipe for you) It certainly is more fun when you get a chance to know the people you are working with and the JoAnn team members were a delight!

NEW Fabrics in store!March 14, 2008 in Crafts, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Quilting
I’m excited to say that piles of new fabric are arriving and in store for you at Jo-Ann Stores. Showin' my artMarch 10, 2008 in Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
I was just back in Ohio to present to the JoAnn’s Marketing and Merchant teams some of my collections for next Spring and Summer. It’s quite a preparation! We do a DVD movie that shows the art and product ideas with enhancing and appropriate music. We also create Presentation Boards and mock up some product samples. Amidst a recent snow storm and very chilly temperatures, I presented to an attentive audience at JoAnn’s headquarters. I talked about each theme, color story and why the collections are trend appropriate. This is always stepping out of the box for me. Artists as a lot tend to be “behind the scenes” kind of people. I guess I’m kind of a mix of both – comfortable being tucked away in my art studio and capable of being gregarious on other occasions. I wish I could show you the art and tell you more about the ideas – but I would be “off’d” by the Fabric Mafia if I did.
Anyway, phew……glad it’s done.
Behind the Seams - Getting Glamorous!February 7, 2008 in Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
I was recently in Ohio doing a photo shoot for an upcoming JoAnn's flyer. I thought you might be curious about how that all goes.
JoAnn’s Marketing team starts out with a very specific sketch (and plan) for the photo. They pass it around to all the marketing management teams at JoAnn's to get all around approval. They send it to me with a variety of wardrobe and color requests. Now at this point I'm usually "required" to go shopping to find suitable choices - because I certainly don't want to wear something that’s already hanging in my closet!
I pack a huge suitcase full of options (new and old) and head to Columbus. What a nice little city that is! I go to a Retail Marketing company called Kreber. They have a great big photo studio there and have everything ready to go when I arrive. I meet with a wardrobe stylist and we review the options that I brought with me and then the Creative Director makes his favorite choices. Next is make-up and hair. That is the best! When I do photos in Spokane, I typically do my own hair and make-up so you feel very glamorous and special when someone does it for you. Plus, they put a LOT more make-up on than I do. Everytime I catch my reflection in the mirror, I double-take because I think I see Angelina Jolie - Ha! (LOL - I wish!)
This all somehow manages to take a couple hours before I head over to the set. (Oh, they iron your clothes too - nice, huh?) At that point you can't sip coffee or dip into the snacks like everyone else is. You've got to preserve the lipstick and avoid things in your teeth. (That's just a little tip for your next photo session :-) They take many, many shots and constantly move little things around, adjust the lighting and tell me to tilt my head this way, then that way. Oh, and "Smile Pretty!" 'til your cheek bones hurt. Every few minutes - someone fusses with the collar on my jacket, pulls my sleeve every which way, glosses my lips, powders down my shine or tries to control a few hairs that have gone awry.
Most of the time is in prep - and once the shoot starts it doesn't take too long. It's kind of like preparing Thanksgiving Dinner - everyone works a lot to plan and prepare - but once everyone sits down - it seems to be over in an instant. See the final result in the upcoming JoAnn circular due out in mid March - and when you see it, "Smile Pretty!"
Midnight shopping for clothes!November 26, 2007 in Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
I had a great trip to Hudson, OH and my interview, book signing and demo went off without a hitch! Well, I guess there was one minor hitch. I made it to Ohio, but my bag didn't arrive until after I was long gone. In fact I had been in Santa Fe, NM for a day and half before it caught up with me. I met some wonderful members of the JoAnn's team for dinner as soon as I arrived in town and one of those lovely ladies took me out to Kohl's midnight madness sale so I could shop for clothes (and underwear!) at 10 o'clock that night.
One of the highlights of my day at JoAnn's was meeting Dan (one of the fabric buyers). He really gets into his work (as you can see). He made this shirt out of DM Christmas fabrics and wore it proudly all day in the store. Talk about making him accessible to all the customers (and anyone) who walked in the doors. You go, Dan!
Shopping IncognitoNovember 12, 2007 in Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
You got my big news about my JoAnn program and thank you for your comments and support. I haven’t received many product samples yet, so like everyone else – if I want it, I need to go shopping for it. Last week I went to my local store and loaded up my cart with gifts and a few things for myself. I love the gift wrap and tins! There is something kind of embarrassing about buying your own stuff for some reason. I found myself looking at the floor when I was up at the check-out thinking that even though my photo was plastered around in the store, maybe she wouldn’t recognize me. Ha!
The ladies at the fabric counter wanted to know when they were getting another shipment of fleece because they were running low and so were the other stores in town. Well, I whipped out my clipboard, and told them when their next shipment would arrive – JK!! (Just Kidding) I wish I knew and I was thrilled to hear it was selling well. We put the items I purchased to good use – because I’m prepping to do some Table setting, gift and project demos at the JoAnn’s flagship store on Darrow Road in Hudson, OH this coming Saturday. (Nov 17 noon-3pm) If you’re in the neighborhood, please stop in to say hello. I’ll be posting a new quilt design using the new fabrics on our Website on the 17th – so you can at least check it out there.
Now at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores!November 1, 2007 in Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
I can finally let the cat out of the bag! After sitting on this for a couple of years now, I no longer have to be “mum” about it. I’m very excited to announce to you that I’ve entered into a product partnership with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. The official launch date is November 4th and promotion will be in full swing by November 11. You will be able to find exclusive lines of fabric, holiday and everyday décor, yarn, crafts and much more at Jo-Ann Stores nationwide! It was a push to get this Holiday program underway and the product lines will be expanding throughout the year. In fact, we work so far ahead that I’m deep into designing Spring 2009 right now. I haven’t been able to share much of my “behind the seams” at the studio, because it’s all been hush-hush up until now.
I am still designing fabrics and products for the Independent stores and that will be different art and design from what you’ll find at Jo-Ann’s. So the good news is, there will be a lot more product and it will be much easier for you to locate. There are 800 Jo-Ann stores in the U.S. If you aren’t located in the U.S. (and I realize that many of you aren’t) – you’ll be able to find the product on the Jo-Ann website. (Beginning Nov. 7) DebbieMumm.com will be directly linked to the Jo-Ann site. In fact we will have a Jo-Ann Landing Page where you can access information about new product releases and FREE projects featuring the Jo-Ann products. I’m so excited – the Holiday products are SO CUTE! Please check them out! Debbie
