Birthdays are the Best

May 27, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Friendship, Quilting, Scrapbooking

DebbieExcited FlowerClipped My super creative team at the office surprised me with a super creative birthday gift this week. Each of them made a wool flower that somehow reflected their own style. The colors and techniques were a personal stamp. Jackie included a ring of wired beads, Kris used scrapbooking supplies and staples to attach her layers together, FlowersNancy used her favorite color of purple, Gil- Jin showcased her exquisite blanket stitching,  Kathy used feminine colors with a pretty flowered button, Monica whipped out a glue stick and tie-dye, Mandie’s was decorated with Margarita glasses, Carolyn used her favorite orange and a big stitch edge and Tom’s was funky with cool stipple stitching. Then they each inserted a (color coordinating!) gift card to one of my favorite places. You know like Nordstrom, Starbucks, AMC, iTunes, Macy’s, Pier One Imports, Mel’s Nursery, Target and the coveted Punch Card for 10 dozen organic eggs from Kathy’s hens. I am set! Thank you for the fantastic gift!!

KRIS WINS!!!

May 21, 2009 in Current Affairs, Television

Ailogo

Our office group got together for a FINALE Party and WHEE what a fun show and surprise results! I was a big Kris fan and voted like crazy for him after the final performance night. After hearing his first song that night my text campaign to friends was “Ain’t No Sunshine if HE’s gone – Vote for KRIS!”

6a00d8341bf6c153ef01156f6508b8970c-800wi How fun would it be to be a producer on that show and come up with ideas for the duets. Kris and Keith Urban was a great pairing. I thought Kris could learn some good moves from Keith. When Adam came out in those 12 inch platform boots and the crazy shoulder apparatus we knew we were in for something – we all screamed with delight when KISS joined him on stage. I loved how relaxed Kris and Adam seemed when they sang “We are the Champions.” Even though it was certainly more of an Adam song, they were both great performing it together with Queen. How apropos. It was surprisingly Old School when it came to some of the guest stars like Rod Stewart, Steve Martin, Lionel Ritchie, Carlos Santana & Gene Simmons. But I did hear the other day that the median age for American Idol viewers is 43. (which is 11 years older than the median age when the show started)

I thought Norman Gentle was a crack up and my, oh my that Bikini girl had gone through a few changes. Even though most of those appearances looked completely staged (Tatiana!); Bikini Girl did look pretty shocked (and annoyed) when Kara showed up to upstage her.

I thought the talent this season was amazing and I downloaded a CD of songs from iTunes that I love. Alison and Danny were fantastic and I had “mad love” for Adam’s interpretation of “Mad World.” But all in all, Kris was my FAV and I’m thrilled he won. Until next year………….

Meet Nancy

May 17, 2009 in Staff

MeetNancy

NancySewingMachine Nancy has been working with my studio for 14 years! She has been our hand quilter and for the last many years our primary seamstress. I’ve never seen anyone happier than Nancy with her pedal to the metal and making her sewing machine smoke. Nancy is so patient with me when I’m trying to land on the perfect fabric combination for our latest design. But when we land, she hardly lifts her head up again until she gets that thing pieced together. Have I mentioned she’s fast!?! Nancy is great at helping with new designs too. She really likes working on Electric Quilt, a computer quilt design program. Because no one understands quilt construction better than Nancy (since she’s the one piecing them together) she does an excellent job proofreading instructions, creating diagrams and brainstorming the easiest and most efficient way to construct a project.

I have never met anyone more resourceful than Nancy with fabric leftovers. She has made more scrap quilts, totes and baby quilts with leftover pieces and blocks than some people have made quilts period. One day I asked Nancy how many quilts she thought she had made over her lifetime. After trying to calculate, we determined it was too many to possibly count. You might have guessed that when Nancy isn’t at work making quilts, she’s at home making quilts! She belongs to an active quilting group that meet every week. There are about a dozen regulars and they usually keep busy on individual projects. She organizes their annual retreat that they call “Somewhere Seminar.” (private joke J

NancysKids

Nancy has 2 grown daughters and a college age son attending school in Alaska. Over the last 4 years Nancy became a Grandma three times over and is always sharing cute little stories about a recent phone call or visit with them. She’s looking forward to a tea party with her Granddaughter Olivia on her next visit to Michigan later this month. Her middle daughter is a professional athlete and participates in Adventure Racing all over the globe. Naturally, Nancy is very proud of unique accomplishments and gives us reports on her latest adventure. Nancy says that when she’s with her daughter Jari, she is so inspired that she feels like she could climb Mt. Everest too. Don’t get me wrong, Nancy is no slouch when it comes to being active. She’s an avid walker and biker. She rides regularly for fresh air and exercise but has also done several long distance trips including biking the  San Juan Islands and their own “Tour de Palouse.” Her longest rides have been 160 miles over 3 to 4 days. Phew! Her big dream is to someday do a cross country ride.

In the winter, when Nancy lets herself away from her sewing machine, she straps on Cross Country skiis and heads up to her favorite trails on Mount Spokane. Nancy enjoys music and her favorite artist is Fernando Ortega, a contemporary Christian singer. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard Nancy sing and she has a pretty nice set of pipes herself. It’s a little joke around the office that you can set your clock by Nancy because at the stroke of noon she’s the first one in the lunchroom. Always in a good mood, Nancy is a true pleasure!

Creating Memorable Year-Round Celebrations with Quilts and Crafts

BookCover I am so excited about my brand new book, HomeComings! We had such a good time designing and creating the projects and then planning and taking all the photos outdoors. Our theme is “creating memorable year-round celebrations with quilts and crafts,” and this 96 page, soft cover, book features more than forty quilt and craft projects to set the scene for seasonal celebrations. I hope you will love this new book as much as we do!

One of the most satisfying things in life for most women is gathering family and friends for a holiday or special occasion celebration. Those events when people come together from far and near are the most memorable and joyous of occasions. Preparing for these events is a big part of the fun and this book is loaded with projects and ideas for setting the scene for joy-filled reunions and homecomings.

Bluedots

We followed the seasons in this book and springtime projects include a beautiful basket quilt and colorful flower-filled lap quilt as well as a selection of pillows, a door banner, and Earth Day Wall Quilt.

A 4th of July celebration is the focus of the summertime section and includes festive patriotic décor including a lap quilt, Americana Wall Quilt, a door banner, and variety of pillows for charming indoor or outdoor décor.

Project Pics!

May 3, 2009 in Crafts, Creativity, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores

Runner1Runner2 I always love it when you send me photos of your projects. I recently received photos from Kathleen of Naples, Florida (it’s been a big Florida week) of the Easter table display she created.  Kathleen recently got back into sewing and made up a darling tea cozy and table runner that coordinate perfectly with the mugs and egg cups in her setting. She even planted real grass in the egg cups – Clever! Kathleen – thank you for sharing how you used my products in your home and I hope sewing and decorating continue to add pleasure to your days
