Night Two – The men dance.
September 27, 2007 in Television
The only man I knew going into the show tonight was Wayne Newton, so I really didn’t know what to expect. But the poor guy, he just didn’t seem like he was quite up to the rigors of dance. And for a musician, he didn’t seem to have much in the way of rhythm. Plus, I was kind of worried that he might pass out. But he’s a legend and he was sweet, humble and his teeth sure were white!
My favorite man of the evening was Helio, the race car driver – he was the epitome of grace with a grin. Totally, Mr. Charm! Mark Cuban, the billionaire was the biggest surprise to me. From seeing the commercials, I had made a prejudgment that I would not like him. He was more humble and likeable than I imagined and really quite the showman. Floyd Mayweather’s dance style was just a little too intense and furious for my liking – but maybe after he settles down a little he’ll bring some gracefulness into his performance. The male model had a great sense of humor about himself and his profession which added likeability to his crowd pleasing gyrations and male model moves and looks.
Okay, I laid it out – my assessment of the evening. I had to rush home from babysitting Lena and Kate last night, so I could get out my pen and pad to take notes on the show.
FAVS in order:
Helio (Indie car driver)
Albert Reed (male model)
Cameron (All My Children soap actor)
Mark Cuban (Bouncing Billionaire)
Floyd Mayweather
Wayne Newton (who received much reverence from the judges – and he should!)

Dancing with the Stars - Night One
September 25, 2007 in Television
Hurray! It's back! I don't have to worry about Murphy being away for college now......phew, three nights this week are already taken. ;) (oh, and Grey's is coming up on Thursday) How sad and pathetic this sounds as I reread this to myself.
Night One - It was the Ladies first night out. There's a lot of anticipation because you really don't have a clue of who's got moves and who doesn't. It was Jane Seymour who charmed me over. She is one gracious lady in every definition of the word. I was curious about Marie Osmond, because I've grown up watching her (even though she's younger than me!) - I have that old Osmond curiousity. (I heard her referred to as the Leeza Gibbons of last year {cute, but clunky} - can't say I disagreed with that assessment)
They should bottle energy from the little blonde dynamo, Sabrina from the Cheetah show on Disney Channel - Wow! Talk about energy. Mel B (Scary Spice) made me LOL as she kept "givin' it" to Maxim. He looked like he wanted to beg for mercy.
Judges seemed pretty tame tonight - although Len let a little grumpy out at moments.
Lady FAVS in order:
Jane Seymour
Cheetah Girl (Sabrina)
Mel B (cheetah costume)
Jennie Garth
Marie Osmond

Countdown to College
September 25, 2007 in Family
The last few weeks have been all about lists, prep and planning for Murphy moving into the dorm and starting college. What an interesting combination of managing and letting go - and the tug of war between resisting and embracing both of those concepts.
I did see a new level of mature behavior from Murphy that included making LISTS!!....and then systematically checking off task after task. Don't get me wrong - there were still several moments (okay, days and weeks) of procrastination, but on moving day - he was ready.
I was even ready. After three major melt-downs (aka crying jags), even I was feeling -- "let's just get on with it!" It's not just the culmination of weeks of preparation, it's really years of anticipation. Today was the day, Move-in Day. I had grown the biggest canker-sore known to man and my neck was in spasm. So, even though I was ready, I was exhibiting some classic physical signs of stress.
It was a beautiful day and a well orchestrated send-off. I'm not worried at all about my son. He's poised for an incredible opportunity for education and in an environment that is exciting and caring. Honestly, it's me that I'm worried about. Learning a whole new way of living without my son as part of my day-to-day is a little daunting. So, bear with me.....I admit to be suffering a little from the "empty-nest" syndrome.
I had a late flight home that evening....I was spent, I was wiped out, I was the one next to the window curled in a ball with blanket over my head and a wad of Kleenex on the next seat.

From an Inspired & Healing Friend
September 18, 2007 in Well-Being A faithful crafter and loyal fan, Gloria - thank you for sharing your story with us. The healing power of purpose and joyful activity is incredible. -Debbie
Throughout the past year I have waited each month for your beautiful and endearing desktop patterns. Each day I wake up and see the cute little ones on my laptop… a wonderful way to start the day. You have helped me through a hard time of getting through breast cancer since, after reading your story, I am going to try and do something with Prim Annie dolls and make Breast Cancer for the Cure Quilts. I have already sold everything I have made so far. I owe it all to you. I have followed you and learned to use my imagination and ideas as you do with items that appeal to others, what a winning spirit. Thank you again for your wonderful site. Looking forward to all the new ideas I know you have coming our way.

Good News!
September 11, 2007 in Technology
I have good news about our e-cards!
About a month ago I received an email from one of our quilters, Heidi. She let me know that she would like to be able to send our ecards as monthly reminders to her quilting group, The Quilting Sisters. “Just wondering if you would consider this kind of modification to your site? You have the perfect cards and I would love to use them but it is just too labor intensive to send out 12 separate emails...I’d rather be quilting!!”
This seemed like a great idea to me and I asked our Website Wizard, Carson, if he could do this for us. “Absolutely!” he responded. So, DONE! You can now choose the option to send the same card to up to 20 recipients at the same time.
Thanks for the great idea, Heidi!

Summer Harvest
September 6, 2007 in Recipes
This is the time of year in Spokane, when our local gardeners are harvesting an abundance of Cucumber and Zucchini Squash. It almost seems they are begging friends, neighbors and co-workers to help take them off their hands. Kathy is one of our most prolific vegetable gardeners. When she's not creating art, apparently she's attending her garden. I thought it would be timely to share a couple of our favorite recipes to help unload some of these excess veggies.

Debbie's Zucchini Bread
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp. Baking soda
- 1 C. oil (I use light olive oil)
- 3 C. Flour
- 2 1/2 C. sugar
- 3 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 C. grated Zucchini
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- Chopped walnuts
Beat eggs and add oil. Add sugar slowly. Mix in zucchini and vanilla. Add sifted flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon. Stir in nuts.
Prepare loaf pans with Pam spray and coat with flour. Bake a 325 degrees for approximately 70 minutes. Test with toothpick for doneness. Makes 2 loaves.

Jackie's Cucumber Salad
- Cucumbers, thinly sliced
- 1 small white onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 tablespoon dried dill, or to taste
Toss together the cucumbers and onion in a large bowl. Combine the vinegar, water and sugar in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and pour over the cucumber and onions. Stir in dill, cover, and refrigerate until cold. This can also be eaten at room temperature, but be sure to allow the cucumbers to marinate for a least 1 hour.
