Quilt Donation Suggestions?

February 7, 2007 in Quilting

Dscn4358forblogDscn4359forblog_1 On my 2006 20th Anniversary Cruise to Alaska, we had a Quilt block challenge on board.  Participants brought blocks they had made out of my "Seasons" fabric line to enter.  We had about 70 entries.  And of course it was really hard to pick 12 winners from such a beautiful selection (we had a tie for 12th, so ended up with 13 winning blocks).  The good news is that all the non-winning blocks were made into 8 crib size quilts for donation to Project Linus.  Here are pictures of two of them. (Special thanks to Mary and Karleen for the sewing and quilting!) The 13 winning blocks are still available to be used in some productive way.  Pat Tobin (our quilt cruise organizer)  wrote me the other day to ask if I had any suggestions of what we should do with the blocks and if I had a preference of an organization that I would like to have the quilt donated to.  So, I thought I'd ask you!

Do you know of a non-profit organization that would have a good use for a quilt similar in color and theme to the quilts pictured here? I'd love to hear your ideas.  -Debbie

Debbie,

Recently my daughter (13 yrs old and also developementally delayed) had Scoliosis Surgery. She had it done at the Shriners in Salt Lake City Utah. One of the things that was nice to see was they had some donated blankets for the kids but could use more ! They are an organization fully funded through donations and believe me they help tons of kids. My beautiful daughter went into surgery with a 58 degree curve and is now sporting rods and pins to hold her spine pretty straight. I would have to say look into the Shriners...they are those guys in the Parades that drive those small cars with those funny hats....they are the best guys with BIG hearts for kids. Good luck!

Tilda - I can sense your positive energy and pride for your daughter. I imagine you're extremely grateful for all the Shriner's have done for her. Thank you for the suggestion a deserving organization. Debbie

Words can never express my gratitude to the Doctors, Staff and Shriners.....My daughter used to cry at night as to "Why did God make me crooked?" As a mother, it killed me, something I couldn't fix. But Thank The Lord for the Shriners....Now she loves her new self! About 8 days after surgery she asked me to walk her over to the mirror to see herself. I did and she started crying...I asked her why she was crying and she said........."I look so beautiful now".......I cried all night. (Just a peek into our little lives.)

Hi Debbie, I would very much like to see quilts for St. Jude's Childrens Hospital made with your materials. I know whenever I see your fabric it brings a smile to my face. Just imagine what a quilt made from Debbie Mumm fabric would do for a child dealing with such illnesses or after effects of such an illness. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

Hello Debbie!! Hello Kris! I was flipping through my cruise scrapbook the other day, remembering all the fun that my mom and I had on the cruise. That was definitely the trip of a lifetime. What ever became of the winning blocks? Did they ever join together and form a quilt? (I wish more of my blocks would just band together and do that on their own - maybe I need to borrow Mary and Karleen.) Did you decide on a charity for the quilt?

Happy Thanksgiving. -Jeanne
